Our curriculum is a powerful tool in providing students with the knowledge, character and skills they need to become effective lifelong learners. It is our responsibility to ensure that our students are taught powerful knowledge, to encourage them to become the best they can be and to achieve more than they ever thought possible. The curriculum is more than simply subjects on a timetable; it is our framework for the education we provide our students. It should amaze, inspire and intrigue. It has the power to change young people’s lives and enable them to enter into the academic conversation.
When students join IES Breckland they will experience a Key Stage 3 curriculum lasting three years, broadly based on the National Curriculum requirements. Our Curriculum Map below provides an overview of what is taught in each subject and in each year. As from September 2020, our Year 9 students will begin the third year of their Key Stage 3 studies in a move away from a three-year Key Stage 4.
All subjects are taught in mixed prior attainment groups at Key Stage 3, except Mathematics, where students are grouped based on their Key Stage 2 scaled scores. Our timetable consists of a two-weekly cycle, comprising 5 x 1 hour lessons per day.
In addition to our curriculum offer we are able to offer SEN provision and Year 7 catch up intervention in Maths and English.
As students move into Year 10 they will commence their GCSE studies. Currently, students in Key Stage 4 follow a core curriculum of English, Mathematics, Science, PSHE and History or Geography. In addition, students receive three options choices from a wide range of subjects that include: Art & Design, Computer Science, French, Ancient History, Performing Arts, Physical Education, Psychology, Film Studies and Design & Technology. Core Physical Education (non-examination) completes the Key Stage 4 curriculum.
